Movie Club Theme for January: Happy 65th Birthday Diane Keaton

Each month we will be featuring a movie club theme.  Each theme will include four movie suggestions for the month and a link to the discussion on our facebook page.

This month's theme is:
Happy 65th Birthday
Diane Keaton
In honor of her 65th birthday on January 5th celebrate
Academy Award winning actress Diane Keaton
with her four Oscar nominated performances.

Annie Hall (1977): Diane won a Best Actress Oscar as the title character in Woody Allen's only Best Picture winning film.  The film follows the on and off romance of neurotic comedian Alvy (Woody Allen) and the ditzy Annie (Diane Keaton). The film makes a unique use of flashbacks in which both Alvy and Annie are able to view each others flashbacks together.  Trivia: Diane Keaton was born Diane "Annie" Hall.

Reds (1981): She received her second Oscar nomination for her role in Warren Beatty's Oscar winning epic story of American communist journalists John Reed (Beatty), Louise Bryant (Keaton) and the Russian revolution.  Intrigued by Reed and his views, Bryant leaves her husband for him as they fight for the communist ideals.  During a period apart, she begins an affair with playwright Eugene O'Neill (Jack Nicholson).  The two come back together as they cover the events during the Russian Revolution. Beatty's opus was critically acclaimed though financially did little more than recover its budget.  The film was nominated for 12 Oscars and won 3 including Best Director for Beatty.  Trivia: The film is the last to have received Oscar nominations in all four categories: Actor (Beatty), Actress (Keaton), Supporting Actor (Nicholson) and Supporting Actress Winner (Maureen Stapleton).

Marvin's Room (1996): Keaton received her third Oscar nomination for her role in this film based on a play by the late playwright Scott McPherson.  She and Meryl Streep play estranged sisters, Bessie and Lee, who come together again when Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia.  The sisters have not spoken much over the last several years during which Bessie has been caring for their bed ridden dying father Marvin (Hume Cronyn) and now needs a bone marrow transplant and Lee to take over caring for Marvin if she should pass away.  Robert DeNiro also stars as Bessie's doctor and Leonardo DiCaprio as Lee's institutionalized son who may be a marrow match for his aunt.  Trivia: This film was the last theatrical appearance for Hume Cronyn in his 60 year career.

Something's Gotta Give (2003): Baby Boom writer Nancy Meyers reunited with and directed Keaton in this comedy that earned her her fourth Best Actress nomination.  The film also reunites Keaton with her "Reds" co-star Jack Nicholson as an aging music executive who always dates much younger women but soon finds himself in a surprising relationship with Keaton.  Also appearing in the film are Amanda Peet as her daughter and Keanu Reeves, in a unexpectedly good performance, as his doctor who develops a crush on Keaton.  Trivia: The film was released jointly by Columbia and Warner Bros. after 20th Century Fox declined to to release the film because they felt Jack Nicholson and DIane Keaton were too old to be the leads.
